Fishing

Fish for the Future

It is obligatory that all those who wish to take part in recreational fishing within the Haga-Haga Conservancy and in general throughout South Africa be in procession of a legitimate Fishing permit . All size and bag limits should be adhered to so as to preserve fish stocks for generations to come.

There is great rock and surf angling to be had at Haga Haga, however no boat ski-boats, kayaks, jet-ski’s, canoes etc. may be used as it is situated in a Closed Area within a Marine Protected Area. (Bosbokstrand to Kei Mouth).
It is imperative to have a current fishing license, which can be purchased from Post Offices as well as St Anthony’s store, at the turn off to Haga Haga and Marshstrand.
Bait and bag limits apply, and it is highly recommended that prospective anglers familiarise themselves with the regulations. Fisheries officers from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries do patrol the area and carry out license and bag checks.
Bait can be purchased from the Haga store and from the hotel.
Species commonly caught are Bronze Bream, White Mussel cracker (Silver Steenbras), Pignose Grunter, Kob, Blacktail, Poenskop (Black Mussel cracker), Stonebream, Galjoen and Zebra.

It is advisable to consult the SASSI list to know what species are more evironmentally friendly when it comes to keeping a caught fish or purchasing fish.

Almost 50% of South Africa's marine resources are fully exploited. A further 15% of marine resources are overexploited, including important commercial species such as West coast rock lobster and Indian Ocean yellowfin tuna populations.
